English as an Additional Language (EAL) Provision at Newent Community School

At Newent Community School, our EAL provision is built on our core HEART values; we are committed to ensuring that all multilingual learners feel welcomed, supported and empowered to thrive academically, socially and personally.

Specialist Expertise

Our EAL support is led by Alona Bazarova, our highly skilled EAL HLTA. Alona works closely with students, teachers, and families to ensure every EAL learner receives high-quality, individualised support. Her work reflects our HEART values through:

  • Honesty: Building trusting relationships with students and families
  • Excellence: Providing expert, research-informed support
  • Respect: Appreciating each student’s language background and culture

Assessment Using the Bell Foundation Framework

We use the Bell Foundation EAL Assessment Framework to accurately identify each student’s English language proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing. This ensures a transparent and honest understanding of each learner’s starting point.

Ongoing assessment allows us to plan effectively, maintain high expectations and celebrate progress, embodying our commitment to Achievement and Excellence.

Targeted Interventions

Once assessed, students access targeted support that accelerates their language development and confidence. This includes:

  • Small-group sessions, where appropriate, focused on vocabulary, grammar and academic language
  • In-class support tailored to individual strengths and needs
  • One-to-one support
  • Use of the Learning Village programme for structured, stage-appropriate language learning Learning Village | Blended EAL Literacy Programme

Our interventions emphasise Teamwork, as students, teachers and specialist staff work together to build strong communication skills and independence.

EAL Student Profiles

Each EAL learner (in Band A-D) has a personalised EAL Student Profile, which includes:

  • Bell Framework proficiency scores
  • Key background information
  • Individual targets
  • Practical support strategies for classroom teachers

These profiles ensure all staff can plan effectively and differentiate with Respect for each student’s needs and experiences. Profiles are shared with parents/carers to foster Honesty and clear communication, making families active partners in their child’s learning journey.

Working in Partnership with Families

We are committed to building positive, respectful relationships with families. We communicate regularly about progress, provide updates on interventions, and offer translation support where needed. By working together, we uphold the HEART value of Teamwork, ensuring that every student feels supported both at home and at school.

Our Commitment

At Newent Community School, we are proud to provide an EAL programme that champions our HEART values in everything we do. Through specialist support, high-quality assessment, targeted intervention, and strong collaboration with families, we ensure that multilingual learners feel valued, confident and able to achieve their very best.
