Friends of Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre

Friends of Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre are engaged primarily in raising funds to buy or contribute to items in addition to those that are purchased using our Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) funding.

We think that by doing this we add to the appeal and success of the school generally by supporting the work done by staff and making additional resources available to the students. Some of the activities are directly linked such as providing refreshments and raffle draws at various school productions, sports day etc.

Our main fundraising activity is supplying tea, coffee and homemade cake at Newent’s Onion Fayre within the grounds of The Old Court which the owners very kindly made available to us.

Some parents choose to donate to us under the Gift Aid scheme, which enables us to reclaim additional amounts from HM Revenue and Customs to add to our funds. Please contact us if you would like to offer your support in this way.

The funds are distributed as agreed by the members of the committee and we receive regular requests from staff and departments.

Purchases made in recent years include the funding of:

  • four outdoor table tennis tables and two outdoor football tables which are located in the quad
  • a new trampoline in the sports centre
  • gardening equipment for students
  • a wheelchair for the Medical Room
  • a complete dictionary and thesaurus re-stocking for the English Department
  • an adjustable piano stool and music stands for music concert

In addition to items bought we also donate small bursaries to students who are fundraising in order to progress in a specific sport or profession etc and need to travel to represent our country or school at a higher level.

We have helped a few students who would otherwise miss out on an opportunity by paying for a confidence boosting activity. These cases have to be very special as in general we try to offer support for things which will benefit numerous students.

We are in desperate need of new members and would welcome anyone who feels they would like to help us. We are currently a very small group of dedicated people who constantly try and juggle work, school and children to fit in this worthwhile fundraising. We understand that you may not be able to make every meeting (about 6 or 7 a year plus events), or every event, but what makes this work is that we all do what we can, support where we can and also have a laugh! It is an excellent way of getting to know how the school works, who the teachers are and the things your children are involved in.
