Course Information

This is a course for students who want to make Music their career or who have a strong interest in performing or composing or learning about music.

There are many opportunities to play in public events and to take leadership of projects or music groups. There is a strong tradition of music-making at Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre.

Our Music Tech provision puts us ahead of many other Comprehensive Schools as we are currently running both Sibelius 7 and ProTools10 on 30 PCs across two classrooms and have an extensive supply of acoustic and electronic instruments.

The A level course is taught over 2 years: AS and A2

AS 1st Year

Unit 1 Performing Music 6MU01
Unit 2 Composing Music 6MU02
Unit 3 Developing Musical Understanding 6MU03

A2 2nd Year

Unit 4 Extended performance 6MU04
Unit 5 Composition and Technical Study 6MU05
Unit 6 Further Musical Understanding

To ensure good grades you will have to:

  • Be a very good solo performer on any instrument or voice (Grade 5 or equivalent is the standard for AS)
  • Be creative with composition and have interesting ideas that can translate to full scale compositions,
  • Know enough about musical styles and be prepared to do some extensive listening,
  • Have knowledge of music theory to Grade 5 standard
  • Be able to keep up with strict deadlines and perform in public (either solo or in an ensemble)
  • Be able to express yourself clearly using appropriate musical terms and
  • Be able to work independently and to a high standard

The Exam board is Edexcel

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade A-C, including Music at B grade and preferably a working knowledge of Sibelius software or a sequencing program. We welcome applications from students who have not taken GCSE Music but are strong performers and composers and have a clear interest in Music. Entry is at the discretion of the Head of Music. Students without Grade 5 Theory will be encouraged to take it during December of their AS year.

Jobs directly related to your degree include: Music Therapist, Musician, Private Music Teacher, and Secondary School Teacher.

Jobs where your degree would be useful: Arts Administrator, Community Arts Worker, Customer Service Manager, Editorial assistant, Event Organiser, Retail Merchandiser, Sound Technician, Broadcasting/film/video.
